7 Yorkshire men are attempting to cycle from the northern tip of France to the Spanish border in 9 days. Garry Ogden, Rupert Pearson, Oliver Garside, Nick Hewitt, Robin Litten, Matt Milbourn and Andy Mullins decided that they wanted to test their abilities on bikes and this seemed ideal. Day 9 - Espana
Miles: 95.6 - Garmin predicted 75 I think I'm beginning to see a pattern now.
Hours in Saddle: 6.19
Average speed: 15mph
We managed a late start after Oliver's strict bike cleaning regime. The normal 6.30am alarm was generously out back to 7.30am and we set off at 9am.Luxury!!!
We managed to lose the first 90 minutes circumnavigating Narbonne, but at least we didn't get lost>. To make sure we kept up the pace, we rode the N roads and worked really well - all the training had paid off. we clocked up the miles and found all the right routes.
We skirted Perpignan, Port Vendres, Banyuls and then began the climb to the border. The weather was good, the wind was behind us and we climbed like 7 Bradleys. We crossed the border into Spain. What a trip!
Thank you to Rupert without whom this would never have got off the ground. Thank you to Oliver who planned the routes, thank you to Robin who kept all the kitty under control, thank you to Andy for the matrix yet to come , Nick for being the mechanic, Matt for the medical work and giggling (and sleeping at lunchtime), Clare for all the driving, support & sympathy, Heather for all the photography support and sympathy and Kyla for the motivation, support & sympathy.
Og the blog.

Day 8 - The tough one!
Without doubt this was the hardest yet - what was 98 miles on the Garmins was actually 124 miles after we went down roads that didn't exist (see photos of salt / flood plains). It was hot and very hard work., the wind had now turned against us and made a frustrating day much harder.
Miles: 124.1miles
Time in saddle: 8.46rs
Average speed: 15mph
We had lunch in Sete by the harbour - Garry's bike fell over in the wind and his helmet fell into the sea. Luckily Dr Matt quick as a flash was down the ladder and to the rescue.
It was Robin's 50th and he had booked a beautiful hotel near Narbonne Plage with a cave tour and dinner at 7.30pm. We walked into the hotel at 8.30pm dehydrated, exhausted and smelly. What a great setting for the night, and we were spoilt with great wines with each course, and amazing food.

Day 7 stats
Miles: 107
Time in saddle: 6.27hrs
Av speed: 16.5mph
Leaving Privas we lost a lot of time trying to find the correct route, so we were somewhat behind schedule. The picked up the pace alongside the Rhone so that we could meet et up with Clare, Heather & Kyla in Chateau Neuf du Pape for a picnic overlooking all the vineyards. A quick tour of Chateau Beaurenard before heading to Nimes.

Day 6 stats
Miles covered: 82
Height climbed: 6,181ft
Time in saddle: Too long
average speed: 15.3mph
Punctures: 2 (Land rover and robin)
The route was from Vienne, Valence, Crozes Hermitage and up to Privas. we were guided through Crozes Hermitage and Tainl'Hermitage by Clive Sinclair who took us on a very picturesque detour>
Clare, Heather & Kyla had to contend with a car puncture and found a very very nice man to help them out.
After a long climb to Privas 5 out of 7 of us believed everything Garmin tells us, but 2 very astute cyclists managed to outwit the garmin guys and sprint to victory. another Cav victory!

Day 5 stats
Miles: 86
Average speed: 14.2
Time in saddle 6hrs 1min
The first day of climbing tested us, especially as the biggest climb started at 1.5 miles. A lot of Garmin confusion and wrong ways, but this is normally sorted by attacking route barre [Barrys Road we think] and one way the wrong way.
Number of speed bumps: 37,342
Weather: Perfect - misty start, 26'c in the afternoon.
We criss crossed The Saone, and are now on the Rhone in Vienne.

Day 4 stats
Punctures: 1 (Rupert)
Herons seen: 8
Sleeps at lunchtime: 2 - not telling
Best weather so far, and although a shorter day, the pace was frenetic. The lead of the peloton was not shared equally, so guess who got the green jersey as we entered the car park? Cav.
